Whether or not you were a fan of the Snowy Mountain Brewery Superboat Vee-class raceboat, the 29-foot single-engine Outerlimits V-bottom made an undeniably significant mark in the offshore racing world with three consecutive Super Boat International world titles. But for the moment at least, the storied 29-footer is out of the offshore racing game as yesterday Michael “Doc” Janssen, the boat’s Denver-based owner, put the boat up for sale.

“This boat is one of a kind and it took a long time to develop,” said Janssen. “My team and I worked very closely with (Outerlimits founder) Mike Fiore and the Outerlimits team to build this boat. It means a lot to me. But with a year-and-a half in the boat’s development and three great years of racing, it’s time to move on to other projects. I would like to see the ‘right person’ take over the boat, someone who can live up to its legacy. I look forward to watching that person continue with its success.
While Janssen, a spinal surgeon with a busy practice, did not announce his own retirement from the sport with the sale of the canopied raceboat, it’s unlikely that offshore racing fans will see him on the course this season.
“My personal and professional life keeps me tremendously busy,” he said. “I have a scheduling conflict with so many of the race dates I just cannot fully commit to the 2015 season. But I’m a boater by nature and a performance boater by desire. I will stay involved in recreational boating and I may look at trying another class, more poker runs and maybe another unique boat development project. For right now, it’s time to offer this Outerlimits trophy to someone who respects it and values its incredible legacy.”
In its three years on the offshore racecourse, Snowy Mountan Brewery claimed three consecutive titles.
