The CMS Offshore Racing team announced today that Rusty Rahm, owner of Wake Effects in Osage Beach, Mo., will be joining the team as the driver and title sponsor of the team’s 48-foot MTI catamaran for the 2016 Super Boat International season.
Following the news that throttleman Johnny Tomlinson was heading to the Superboat class this year to race with the Performance Boat Center team, Rahm approached CMS team owner Bob Bull and MTI owner Randy Scism—the driver and throttleman of the team’s CMS 3 52-foot MTI that won the 2015 SBI Superboat Unlimited-class world championship in Key West, Fla.—about racing with the team alongside veteran driver and throttleman Jeff Harris in the Superboat Unlimited class.

The deal was completed quickly, and now Rahm and Harris are planning to start testing in the next few weeks with hopes of continuing the success of the 2015 season in which Harris and Tomlinson claimed the SBI national championship in the CMS 03 boat, which is being rebranded as the Wake Effects 03/CMS boat.
“I have to give credit to Gene Greber, the CMS team’s crew chief—he helped put all of this in motion and is making sure we’re on track for this season,” said Rahm, who has to miss the season-opening race in Cocoa Beach, Fla., in May due to prior obligations but plans to race the remainder of the SBI season as well as at the Lake Race on June 4 in front of hometown fans on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks. “Obviously to be able to start my racing career with the defending points champion is a dream come true. I feel like there is no better place to learn. I mean I’m going to be surrounded by some of the best minds in the sport.
“The opportunity to run with Jeff is one I couldn’t pass up,” he continued. “He has a world of knowledge and is willing to share it with me. I definitely have my work cut out for me, but I can’t wait to get out there.”

Rahm added that Bull will be filling in for him in Cocoa Beach so the team doesn’t miss out on points at the first race—Bull and Scism announced a more-limited schedule this season with only three races before the world championships in Key West. Rahm also addressed the fact that he was supposed to race with veteran offshore Randy Kent of Marine Concepts, admitting that the chance to race under the leadership of Bull, Scism and the rest of the CMS team was just too good to pass up. He said he still plans to support Kent and the Marine Concepts team at some level.
“Rusty has talked about going racing for some time—it’s always been one of his goals so we put a plan together that gives him the opportunity to drive alongside Jeff Harris, who has been a throttleman most of his career,” Scism said. “We’re all excited to have him on the team, and I know he’s excited to be part of the team.”
Harris expressed excitement as well after getting the chance to meet Rahm and his wife, Natalie, recently.
“Rusty is going to be a great addition to the team,” Harris said. “He is a very focused individual who has obviously been successful in business and other aspects of life. I think our personalities match very well. I’m looking forward to getting in the boat with him.”
