Chances are good that Quad, the Wisconsin-headquartered outfit that prints our Year In Review magazine, has nothing on press today. Then again, it’s a significant company with multiple domestic and international locations. The presses could be rolling. Because deadlines are deadlines.
And ours is Tuesday, December 27. That’s when all files for the 2022 Speed On The Water Year In Review issue are due at the printer. Fortunately, getting them there does not involve icy roads or runways. It all happens electronically, which to a couple ink-stained wretches who remember the days of physical photo separations and art-boards is still amazing.
Until we receive our copies of Year In Review, no paper changes hands. Even our significant payment—196-page oversized magazines don’t come cheap—happens electronically. Professionally speaking, with the exception of Year In Review, we live in the digital world. And yet it all still seems like a bit of a miracle.
Make that a Christmas miracle.
And so when the frenzy of present-opening and breakfast dies down this morning, we’ll get back to work. It’ll be a light day for sure with plenty of breaks before Christmas dinner, but we’ll be picking at it. We are at once close to done and a long way from finished.
That’s the nature of publishing, especially when it comes to print. The last details are always the toughest.
But oh are they worth it when we’re finally holding that beautiful magazine in our hands in January—and knowing you’re holding it in yours.
Merry Christmas to you all.
