To enhance its range of new high-performance powerboat offerings, American Custom Marine became a Donzi Marine dealer—specifically to sell the Donzi 22 Classic model—a couple of months ago. Michael Knoblock, the owner of the full-service Kimball, Mich., dealership, which also represents Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats, opted to keep the Donzi addition under wraps until they took delivery of their first two 2022 model-year 22-footers, which happened last week.
Powered by a Mercury Racing 520 engine, this new-for-2022 Donzi 22 Classic is an aquatic hot rod available now.
Now, the company has a pair of Donzi 22 Classics—one powered by a single 430-hp Mercury Marine 8.2 engine and the other equipped with a 520-hp engine from Mercury Racing—from the Washington, N.C., boat-builder in its showroom. According to the dealership’s Tyler Blankenship, they had originally planned on holding onto to the stunning pair until the Detroit Boat Show in January, but with that event cancelled they’ve chosen to offer them now.
Prices range from $150,000 to $220,000, depending on power and other options.

Though Donzi currently offers two other models—the 41 GTZ and the 38 ZRC—American Custom Marine’s primary is focusing its sales efforts on the 22 Classic.
“They have been popular on Lake St. Clair since the ’80s and they still are,” said Blankenship. “People still love the design, which has been around forever, around here.”

Earlier this year, Donzi changed up the bottom for the 22 Classic. Gone is the original rounded keel, which tended to make the boats a handful as owners stepped up the power. It has been replaced by a modified V-pad.
“With the new bottom, the 22 Classic is a lot more manageable with bigger power,” said Blankenship. “That’s the coolest part of the new boats, I think.”
